At Bujinkan Brisbane we welcome beginners, new members and visitors from other dōjō. Our aim is to provide quality instruction in a fun, safe, friendly and supportive training environment. There is no upper age limit and we are open to students of all cultural backgrounds and levels of physical ability. Currently we only run adult classes and prefer applicants to be at least eighteen years of age.

We primarily train in Budō Taijutsu (Martial Arts Body Technique). Rather than speed and strength, our focus is on the co-ordinated and efficient use of body mechanics, fluid movement, balance control, timing and distance.

Budō Taijutsu incorporates techniques of striking, kicking, grappling, throws, joint controls, chokes and holds.

Born 1931 in Noda City, Japan, Masaaki Hatsumi-sensei spent his youth training in a number of martial arts. His search for the true martial arts of Japan led him to a martial artist named Toshitsugu Takamatsu (1888 - 1972). From 1957 until his teachers passing in 1972, Hatsumi-sensei trained in the nine martial art lineages he would later inherit as grandmaster. Hatsumi-sensei then integrated the nine schools and established the Bujinkan Dōjō in the 1970s. Hatsumi-sensei retired from training in 2020 at age 88.

The Bujinkan has its headquarters in Noda City, Japan and has spread internationally; now encompassing many thousands of students worldwide.

Duncan Mitchell and Shiraishi Isamu-sensei - 2024

I joined the Bujinkan in 1988 in Perth Western Australia, then moved to Japan in 1990 where I lived and trained until 1995. After returning to Australia, I have continued to return to Japan almost every year.

In Japan, I was fortunate to train directly under the grandmaster Masaaki Hatsumi-sensei, senior instructor Isamu Shiraishi-sensei and many other Bujinkan teachers including Seno-sensei, Noguchi-sensei, Sakai-sensei, Hosoda-sensei, Sakuma-sensei, Oguri-sensei, Nagato-sensei, Nakadai-sensei, Yoshida-sensei and former Bujinkan teachers Manaka-sensei and Taguchi-sensei.

On returning to Australia in 1995 I opened my first club in Perth, before moving to Brisbane in 1997, where I opened Bujinkan Brisbane - which continues until this day.

  • Passed fifth dan test and received Shidoshi (Instructor) licence in 1995
  • Awarded with the Bujinkan Gold Medal: 2001
  • Received the highest dan rank issued in the Bujinkan: 2009
  • Received Bufu Ikkan Award: 2011
  • Received Yūshū Shihan (Teacher of Excellence) Menkyo: 2015
  • Received Dai-Shihan ('Great' Teacher) Menkyo: 2017
In 2020 I published my first book Budo Taijutsu - An Illustrated Reference Guide of Bujinkan Dojo Budo Taijutsu and am currently working on a second book on Bōjutsu.
