About

Traditional Japanese Martial Arts in Brisbane

Bujinkan Brisbane has been teaching traditional Japanese martial arts in Brisbane since 1997. Training is conducted in a small private dōjō in Moggill, where the focus is on the study and practice of Budō Taijutsu and the traditions from which it developed.

The Bujinkan brings together the teachings of nine classical Japanese martial schools, including the historic tradition of Togakure Ryū Ninjutsu. Training encompasses unarmed techniques, traditional weapons, movement, strategy and the principles that connect these different traditions.

The dōjō is led by Duncan Mitchell, who began training in the Bujinkan in 1988. From 1990 to 1995, Duncan lived in Japan, training extensively under Masaaki Hatsumi Sensei and many of the senior Japanese Shihan of the Bujinkan.

Bujinkan Brisbane was established in Brisbane in 1997 and has remained a place for the long-term study of traditional Japanese martial arts.

Duncan currently holds the rank of Dai-Shihan and has continued to teach and write about the Bujinkan throughout this time. Two books have been published, Budo Taijutsu and Bojutsu, with further books currently in development.

The purpose of this website is to provide information about training at the dōjō while also making available writing and resources relating to the history, practice and traditions of the Bujinkan.

Our Training

Training at Bujinkan Brisbane is centred on Budō Taijutsu (“Martial Arts Body Technique”), the movement system through which the essence of the nine classical Japanese martial schools of the Bujinkan are practiced.

The curriculum includes unarmed techniques such as striking, throwing, locking, grappling, evasion and ukemi, together with a broad range of traditional weapons including the sword, bō, hanbō, jō, yari, naginata, bisentō, jutte and shuriken.

For a fuller description of training at Bujinkan Brisbane, see our Training page.
